Charles Mwangi

Acting Director Space Applications & Utilization
Kenya Space Agency

Charles is a distinguished leader and prominent expert with extensive experience in Space Technology, Earth Observation, and policy development. Currently serving as the Acting Director of Space Applications and Utilization directorate at the Kenya Space Agency, he has spearheaded and championed numerous initiatives, including the development of Kenya's Space Policy, Space Strategy and the recent assessment and development of a roadmap to guide the growth of the space ecosystem in Kenya. 

His work has focused on supporting the development of space-related systems and leveraging space-derived data for societal benefits and decision/policy support. 
Notably, Charles has represented Kenya in global forums like the Group on Earth Observations (GEO) Programme Board and the United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS). Charles currently serves as member of the multiple advisory committees including Digital Earth Africa, UN Science Policy Business Forum (UN-SPBF) on the Environment, Africa Earth Observation Innovation Challenge, UK-Africa Space Global Africa Alliance and Executive Committee of Earth Space Sustainability Initiative (ESSI).

With a rich academic background that includes an International Master’s in Space Mission Design and Management and Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering (Control Engineering), he is currently undertaking his PhD studies on Earth Observation at Sapienza University of Rome. Charles combines technical expertise with strategic vision and keen interest to support the growth the technology sector in Africa. He is a passionate advocate for STEM education having conducted numerous technical training and outreach programs to inspire future generations. His contributions to global space initiatives and his commitment to advancing Kenya's technological capabilities underscore his role in shaping Africa’s space sector.
